The Grand Lake Theatre is the most ornate cinema I’ve ever visited. It has four screens, each decorated in a different style, from Egyptian to Moorish. In the main auditorium there’s a beautiful old Wurlitzer organ, played live before Friday and Saturday evening shows.
With its plush red velvet, gold leaf, and subtle lighting, the whole experience makes you feel like you’re heading somewhere truly special. The theatre also has a small display of historic projectors and can still accommodate 35mm exhibitions and even 70mm films when needed, which adds to the sense of cinema history being very much alive.

The scale of the Grand Lake is far bigger than what we’re planning for Aftersun (a 40–50 seat capacity), but that feeling you get the moment you walk inside is something I think we can recreate in our own cosy way.
The theatre also hosts travelling film festivals like Noir City Festival, and with over four screens the venue will be showing 24 different films over 10 days!
